Josh Ashley is a 25-year-old Medical Underwriter at Allied National, one of the nation’s oldest and most experienced third party administrators. Located in Overland Park, Kansas, Allied National works with major national insurance companies providing quality benefit plans for employers and individuals since 1970. They offer an array of services to agents, covered members, and partners including: regulatory compliance; medical underwriting; premium billing and collection; customer service; claim processing; and health care management.

Five Questions with Josh Ashley

Title aside, what would you say it is that you do in your current position?

As a medical underwriter, my role at Allied National is to deliver appropriate information for new groups working with us. I determine the rates for these new groups and handle things like banking and premium deposits.

How do you see your experience in Next Leader Now making you a better boss going forward?

Through the Next Leader Now program, I worked with my Solutions 21 coach and developed something we call a ‘Learning Summary.’ This experience provided me with an opportunity to move throughout the different divisions of the company and understand the many aspects of our business. Along with the Learning Summary, Next Leader Now has taught me how to communicate with my peers. I find myself placing fellow employees into the different DiSC profiles on a daily basis. Finally, the assigned articles help keep me organized and effective as a leader. This program has allowed me to reflect on how I do my job and why I do it.

One of the early exercises in the program is developing a personal vision that guides your overall personal strategic plan. What impact do you think Next Leader Now has had and will have on your ability to achieve that vision?

The Next Leader Now program has given me the opportunity to figure out and define my goals, both professionally and personally. Establishing my personal strategic vision has helped me roadmap how I’m going to achieve the goals I have for myself.

What would you say is the secret sauce of Next Leader Now and why?

I would say the secret sauce of the Next Leader Now program is the network within the cohort. Next Leader Now brought together a group of people with a surplus of similarities (we all work for family-owned businesses). This program is a bit different for me than the others, however, because I’m a bit younger and not in a management position. This circumstance has proved extremely beneficial. Hearing their stories has helped me to think about how I would react to the situations they encounter daily as managers.

If you could bust one myth about Millennials (born 1980-2000), what would it be?

That our generation does not work hard. I’m sure it’s something that every generation has said about the generation that follows them. As Millennials, we know that we can’t just go through the motions. We don’t want that! We know it takes hard work to get to where you want to be in life.
